Amazing combat writing! This reminded me of the combat simulation training in Dan Simmons's "Hyperion" where soldiers in training face virtual simulations of battle scenarios in various historical time periods. I'm curious to see what scenarios might come next, like maybe the trenches of WWI, or maybe a battle against AI powered drones in an urban setting.
Reading this makes me think both 2001 a Space Odyssey, and the Matrix both kind of failed to deliver their respective concepts... i.e. Evolutionary interference from an outside agency, and false memories/realities.
This is WAY more visceral than both and delivers the FEELING of being directed by a God like force.
Both 2001 and Matrix ran off way too quickly to pull back the curtain on the monoliths and the simulation far too fast rather than stay in the much more interesting, frightening, and paranoid space of occasional realisation of "who or what is doing this to me?" before being pulled back into the routine.
This story is much more mysterious and yet relatable than both because a memory of a dream of the screaming monolith or the agent moving at supersonic speed is more engaging than throwing it in your face.
Also fantastic character in Nyl - sadist or puppet? Courageous or cruel? Do I feel sorry for the manipulation she's under or am I repulsed by her actions...

2001 meets Civ. Cool vibes!
Holy heck how am I just discovering this? I have absolutely no idea what's going on and I love it!
Thank you so much Minnie, your kind words mean a lot! Part 6 will be out in less than 2 days.
Yes! I’ve got some catching up to do then :)

Don't know but I'm certainly interested!
